Mayweather vs Pacquiao: Who will win?

So I’m chipping in with my opinion on a topic that many pundits have been squabbling over for the past five years, since the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao was initially set to take place. Who will reign supreme as the greatest boxer of our era? I’m going to go against all the pundits and say Pacquiao, for a few very specific reasons.

pacquiao

Taste of defeat

Despite Pacquiao holding 5 losses and 2 draws in comparison to Mayweathers’ 47-0 record, some would dispute that losing makes a fighter better. Pacquiao knows the taste of defeat all too well and will do anything to avoid the same fate for the Mayweather fight. Of course, you can’t overlook an undefeated fighter, let alone the fact that Mayweather has never even been knocked down in a fight! But as they say there’s a first time for everything. And with a great possibility of both fighters retiring after the bout, Pacquiao could be Mayweathers toughest opponent and could be the one to finally lay him on the canvas.

pac

Manny the puncher

Pacquiao’s first 2 defeats came in the flyweight division, when he was a one-handed fighter far from the spectacle he is today. In Pacquiao’s 3rd, 4th and 5th defeats to Erik Morales, Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquéz respectively, Pacquiao fought fighters who threw over 100 punches a round. Floyd Mayweather is a defensive fighter, probably the best counter fighter that has ever lived. But he throws no where near 100 punches a round. Mayweather sits back, ducks, dips, and slips punches all day and looks for the counter attack, but with an agressive Pacquiao coming at him, he may find this alot more difficult to do. And hey, I’m not going to go against Mike Tyson!

The Power

While Mayweather may have the edge on hand speed, Pacquiao has a notable advantage in power. Although a smaller fighter at 5’6.5″, Pacquiao can do some serious damage on Mayweather if he can get on the inside and he is definitely a fighter who is willing to take a few shots so he can get on the inside to really hurt Mayweather.

after-facing

Floyd’s time or Manny’s time?

This fight will definitely be the defining moment of each of these fighters careers. Both are hall of fame fighters. Pacquiao has a record 8 titles in different weight divisions, Mayweather will go down as one of the greatest fighters of all time alongside Muhammed Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson. But if this fight did not happen for Mayweather, there would always be the question of “yeah, but you never fought Pacquiao”. Mayweather had to fight and has alot more to lose from this fight than Manny has, but Pacquiao has been the underdog enough times to pull an upset. Never before have two fighters been more evenly matched, but I really believe this is one of those times when the underdog can prevail. Manny himself even prefers to be the underdog.

Many people say that Mayweather will win, but they want Pacquiao to win. I’m going to go with Pacquiao and even though much of the stats are against him, there’s that indescribable inner something that Pacquiao has that could just edge it.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao: 5 years too late?

Finally it’s here! The fight that boxing fans worldwide have been waiting for. Fight of the decade and believed to be the fight of the century, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather versus Manny ‘The Pacman’ Pacquiao is only days away. However, one of the most anticipated fights in boxing history has not arrived without its fair share of heartache.

The fight was originally scheduled for March 13, 2010, but both camps couldn’t agree to terms after Mayweather requested for Pacquiao to undergo random Olympic-style drug testing, to which Pacquiao felt insulted and declined. The drawn out talks and the failure to make the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight was named The Ring magazine Event of The Year for 2010.

According to Yahoo sports!, an eight-page contract was sent on December 11 by Golden Boy Promotions, on behalf of Mayweather to Top Rank, representing Pacquiao, that proposed a 50-50 financial split between the sides for a fight to take place on March 13, 2010.

The eight-page agreement was so detailed that it indicated which of the two fighters would step onto the scale first at the weigh-in (Pacquiao), who would walk to the ring first (Pacquiao), who would be introduced first (Mayweather) and who had first choice of the locker room (Mayweather). It detailed that the bout would have been on HBO Pay-Per-View at a cost of $59.95. Billing was to be “Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, presented by Top Rank, Golden Boy Promotions, Mayweather Promotions and M-P Promotions. The contract also called for both fighters to submit to Olympic-style drug testing.

A Mayweather-Pacquiao bout at that time was expected to be the largest-grossing fight in history, in which total revenues could reach $300 million. Experts predicted the fight would sell between 2.5 million and 3 million pay-per-views in the U.S.

On December 13, 2009, Pacquiao’s adviser, Michael Koncz, said Mayweather’s request for Olympic-style drug testing was a laughing matter and they had no concerns whatsoever about it. “Our reaction is, ‘So what?’ We know Manny doesn’t take any illegal drugs or anything. And none of this is getting under Manny’s skin or anything. I’m here with Manny, and to him, it’s like a joke. It’s a laughing matter,” said Koncz.

After reports had surfaced that both parties had agreed to all terms, Golden Boy Promotions released a press release on December 22, 2009, revealing that Pacquiao was unwilling to comply with the Olympic-style drug testing requested by Team Mayweather. The following day, Bob Arum, Top Rank founder and CEO, declared the fight was off and Pacquiao would be facing a different opponent. Arum said that Floyd pressed for the blood testing and urine samples even in the run up to the weigh-in, and said that Pacquiao was freaked out with the blood testing and felt it made him weaker, stating that Mayweather knew this and was just harassing Pacquiao.

Titles

Freddie Roach told that he would prefer for Pacquiao to give his final blood sample a week before the bout and no later than 72 hours before.

Pacquiao filed suit in U.S. District Court in Nevada on December 30, 2009, against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Floyd Mayweather Sr., Roger Mayweather, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions executives Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer, alleging that they made false and defamatory statements accusing him of taking performance-enhancing drugs.

Both sides agreed to enter into mediation on January 7, 2010, in hopes of coming to an agreement on the blood testing issue. Two days later, after hours of negotiating during mediation, Arum declared that the fight was officially off after Mayweather refused to agree to a 24-day cut-off date. Mayweather revealed that he offered a 14-day cut-off date to Team Pacquiao, but it was rejected.

After the failed negotiations, both boxers moved on to other fights. On March 13, 2010, Pacquiao defeated Joshua Clottey via unanimous decision, and on May 1, 2010, Mayweather beat Shane Mosley by a unanimous decision.

On December 12, 2014, Mayweather proposed a May 2, 2015 fight with Pacquiao, citing his indirect frustration at not being able to make the fight happen in the past by stating that Pacquiao had lost to both Marquez and Bradley, and that he (Pacquiao) was “not on his level”. He then went on to close his comments with, “Let’s make this fight happen for the people and for the fans. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. May 2nd”.

On January 27, 2015, Mayweather and Pacquiao finally met each other face to face for the first time during an NBA game between the Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks in Miami. Pacquiao said they exchanged phone numbers and would communicate with each other. Pacquiao’s advisor, Michael Koncz, said that the two future Hall of Famers later met at Pacquiao’s hotel for about an hour to discuss the pending superfight and work out the remaining issues. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum expressed optimism that the fight could be finalized by Super Bowl Sunday at the soonest and that there would be no further deadlines for the fight, stating that the negotiations are nearly complete.

On February 20, 2015, Mayweather announced that the fight was official and had finally been signed to take place on May 2, 2015. Mayweather and Pacquiao will face off at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The fight is expected to shatter PPV buy records and gross millions of dollars with the ticket prices ranging from $3,500 to $250,000. Boxing experts say this match could be the richest fight in boxing history and could generate $300 million.

Initial expectations for the average ticket prices was between $3,000 and $4,000, although in late February average ticket prices were around $10,506.41, almost $50 more than the Super Bowl. Ticket prices at the MGM Grand Garden Arena are expected to smash the current live-gate record of $20 million, held by the Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez fight in 2013.

Many will argue that this fight has come five years too late, when Pacquiao was at the peak of his popularity and powers and Mayweather had returned from a 21-month layoff. But they still remain the no.1 and no.2 fighters in the world and with 5 years of waiting, we are all thrilled that they will finally meet in the ring to answer our question ‘Who is the best?’.

Dannic is back!!

For any of you house Junkies, the highly anticipated release of Dannic’s ‘Fonk’ on May 4th on ‘Revealed Recordings’ is nearly upon is. I got to see Dannic last year in the O2 in Dublin and if this song is anything like his previous, it will be a smash. Here is a teaser of his new track on Soundcloud:

Season Shockers

WITH another Premier League season nearing an end and a title chase that seems to be already finished, along with a top 4 that already seems to have already been picked, there doesn’t seem to be many surprises left for the end of the season. However, this season has had its fair share of surprise players emerging from the ranks and rising to the pressure that entails Premier League super-stardom and some utter disappointmentsin the transfer windows that were expected to take control this season. So with the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, here are the biggest shocks of the 2014/2015 Barclays Premier league.

The Good

Harry Kane

Harry Kane celebrates scoring the equaliser in the London derby

What is there to say? Top scorer in all competitions this year in the Premier league and neck and neck between him and Aguero to get the Golden Boot, earned his first England call-up, shoe-in for young player of the year and even played in goals against Asteras Tripolas after Hugo Lloris was sent off. And at the age of 21, he is sure to dominate the league for years to come if he continues firing at this rate. ‘Hurricane Harry’, is there anything he can’t do?

Chelski

The 'Special One'

The ‘Special One’

Nothing but pure class this season. Performed unbelievably this season and with players like Diego Costa, Fabregas, Courtois and Oscar and with Eden Hazard playing the way he is, and the strength in depth they possess, it would be hard to go against them winning the league again next season.

Not such of a surprise but what is a surprise is that after years of buying, youth academy players have finally made the breakthrough to the main squad. Nathan Ake has been included a good amount this year, as well as players such as Lewis Baker, Izzy Brown, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Charlie Colkett and Dominic Solanke who have all been given professional contracts this year. The future is looking bright for homegrown Chelsea FC players.

Mourinho on the young academy prospects:

‘My conscience tells me that if, for example, Baker, Brown, and Solanke are not national team players in a few years, I should blame myself’.

Marouane Fellaini and Manchester United not ‘crumbling’

Marouane Fellaini

After a horrible season in 2013/14 where they finished a measly 7th, United have defied all expectations and criticism to turn things around this season and finish in the top 4. As a Manchester United fan, it was a tough year. Watching United was often a tedious and horrible ordeal. But with lots of questions over the summer signings and a shaky defence that had no real stability at the start of the year, United have become a force to be reckoned with once again and a tactical powerhouse under the guidance of Van Gaal. One player who has notably stepped up his game and is the main cause of this surge of excellence is Marouane Fellaini. After much criticism from supporters last year, myself included, for not providing enough after his mega-money move from Everton, Fellaini has been a real driving force behind Man United’s success this season and is sure to be one of the first names on the team sheet after struggling to establish himself last season. things are looking on the up for Fellaini and United, at long last.

‘Last season was a bad season for everyone, not just me,The criticism went to me because I was the first transfer of Moyes. I accept that.’

Francis Coquelin

Coquelin

With all the anticipation around Alexis Sanchez moving to Arsenal and the goals and assists he has totted up, one man has gone under the radar, Francis Coquelin. Leading the league in interceptions and against Burnley, broke the season record for interceptions in a single game with 11, Coquelin is one of the first names on Wengers’ team sheet and an unsung hero in a star studded Arsenal team afetr a tough start to his career. Back in 2011 when the French midfielder was one of the biggest liabilities in Arsenal’s infamous 8-2 drubbing by Manchester United, he became somewhat of a laughing stock and caused a lot of people to question Arsene Wenger’s judgment. However, Coquelin has completely turned things around this year. After Wenger finally gave him another chance in the first team when the club’s injury list was filling up, the 23 year-old shocked and impressed everyone with his ability in the holding midfield position. He became a rock in the midfield, allowing players like Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla to push up more and create goals. Coquelin has almost instantaneously put himself in Arsenal’s starting XI and without him, the Gunners would not be having the hot streak that they are at the moment.

Philippe Coutinho

coutinho

A surprise emerger as contender for Player of The Year, Coutinho has been in sensational form for Liverpool this season and after losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona in the summer, the injury woes of Daniel Sturridge, the misfiring Balotelli and all that has gone wrong for Liverpool up front, Coutinho has picked up the pieces, scoring goals for fun from midfield and really stepping up for Liverpool when they lacked a goal-scoring threat up front.

The Bad

Liverpool and Mario Balotelli

Rogers

Well, it wasn’t really their year after all now was it? It was a case of anything that could go wrong, did, this season for Liverpool. 5 games left and 6 points outside the Champions League spots, all is not lost. There is still alot to play for. But with all the hype they haven’t done what they would have liked this year, early exit from the Champions League, disappointing FA Cup exit to Aston Villa, injury riddled Sturridge, but above all else, Mario Balotelli.

Why always me indeed. He has never really got going since his arrival. Everyone knew how much of a gamble it was for Liverpool to sign Mario Balotelli, but the general feeling upon his £16 million arrival back in English football was the Reds had got themselves a bargain if the Italian could apply himself. What a disaster that has been though.

Seems like back to the drawing board for Rodgers. Maybe next season is their year, ehy?

Angel Di Maria

di maria

From galactico, World Cup star and FIFA Team of The Year, to sitting on the bench in favour of Ashley Young, it hasn’t been a season to remember for Di Maria. After a £59.7 million transfer, Di Maria had a very promising start scoring in his debut against QPR and looked to be the only world-class looking player in a sluggish Manchester United team. But form dropped soon after and has failed to return since, Di Maria hasn’t really justified his price tag and world-class status that he left Madrid with. However, with him determined to stay at United and prove his worth, and his return to the Champions League next year imminent, there is still alot of hope.

Ross Barkley

Barkley

A bit harsh I guess. One of the brightest prospects in English football, Barkley hasn’t really built on from a great season last and after such a meteoric rise much was expected of him again this season. Many claim he should have been starting at the World Cup and perhaps this year was his year to announce himself as the best midfielder in England. Just one goal this season, and a target of frustration amongst the Everton fans. Hopefull next season will prove to be his defining one.

The Ugly

Falcao ‘flop’

Radamel Falcao has been non-existent this season

Radamel Falcao has been non-existent this season

From what was one of the deadliest deadline-day signings to one of the biggest flops, Falcao has had a torrid time in Manchester. Deprived of game time due to injury at the start of the season and a lack of faith shown by the manager, Falcao has definitely not lived up to his credentials and may soon be going back to Monaco with a terrible spell in England added to his CV. With Robin Van Persie injured for most of the season, Rooney playing in a midfield role and Manchester United lacking goals it was thought that Falcao would add the firepower up front that Man United so desperately needed. However, that was not the case.

Sunderland’s 8-0 defeat to Southampton

Ugly from a Sunderland point of view, or fantastic if you’re a Saints fan! Either way, 8-0 is a colossal scoreline.
